The Rev. Dr. Marion Hendrickson served as Pastor at St. Peter’s, Arlington from 1991 until his retirement in 2014. Prior to that, he had a life filled with music.
Before becoming a pastor, he started teaching music and band at the middle and high school level in Baxter, Iowa in 1975 before switching to Larkin High School in Elgin, IL. In the fall of 1981, he began his pastoral studies at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. His first call was to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oconomowoc, WI. He served there as an Associate Pastor until taking the call to Arlington in the fall of 1991.
During his tenure as pastor in Arlington, he took a continued interest and worked to develop a music program at St. Peter’s. He began the handbell choir. He took over the choir director position. He started choir cantatas every Palm Sunday. He became connected with the Madison Brass and had them play at St. Peter’s.
He oversaw a major organ renovation near the end of his tenure. In 2012, the pipes were restored. But the major work was installing a Walker Digital instrument on a new 3 keyboard console. The addition added 89 stops and 96 ranks of sound to the organ.
While here, he earned his Masters in Sacred Theology. His thesis was Behold the Man!: An Anthropological Comparison of the Christologies of John Macquarrie and Wolfhart Pannenberg He earned his Doctorate in theology at the University of Durham. His dissertation was Musica Christi: A Lutheran Aesthetic (American University Studies). Both of these works are still available today.
After retirement in 2014, we went back to the classroom to teach band and instrumental music. He was still doing that until the Lord called him home to heaven in 2018.
To honor that legacy, this organ series has been named after him. We give thanks to God for bringing Pastor Hendrickson to Arlington and for blessing the work he did in his nearly 23 years as pastor.
We look forward to this series of music and musicians as they come through Arlington and share their God-given talents with our community!
